Experienced Broadcaster with a Masters in Film Journalism
  • September 28, 2014

I have a Masters degree in Film Journalism from the University of Glasgow. Although the degree was focused specifically on the world of cinema, it taught me very valuable skills that can be applied to the wider world of journalism. With classes taught by some of Scotland's leading journalists in the field, I have had the opportunity to hone my skills in review and feature writing, conducting interviews and writing articles around them, as well as the legal and ethical issues that come with a career in journalism. During this course I was also able to gain valuable radio experience, shadowing the host of the Culture Show, Janice Forsythe, at BBC Radio Scotland in Glasgow.

I have over 4 years experience as a Freelance Film Journalist. During this time, I have created and maintained my own film review blog; The High Hat Film Review, which contains film reviews and other features. I have also contributed to other websites, such as The Artifice and Telstar Film Review, I am still contributing weekly film reviews for the latter. I have also had articles published in the Scottish culture magazine, I-ON, which has a large readership in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

I have two years experience working at a Scottish radio station, East Coast FM, during which time I had numerous positions. I began working at the station as a film reviewer, in which I would hold a guest spot on the weekly movie soundtrack show, providing reviews of the week's new releases. I held this position for approximately six months, when I began hosting my own show, Life at the Movies. As it was a small station, I was responsible for producing, putting together the playlist, and arranging guests, as well as hosting the two hour show. I would also read community news segments, as well as traffic and weather reports. As well as my weekly radio spot on a Sunday evening, I also acted as cover on some of the weekday morning, and drive time shows.

As well as radio experience, I have also hosted my own film podcast, The High Hat Film Podcast, for the past 2 years. I have gained substantial experience in sound editing, thanks to numerous hours I have spent editing my own show, which can be found on iTunes.
