Joe Flynn, Vice Chair - Radio

Joseph Flynn started in the radio business at the age of 16 as a part-time janitor at WSRS FM. Since then he has held nearly every position in a radio station. He's been a weekend on-air personality, held sales positions, been a Local Sales Manger and a General Sales Manager, as well as a VP/Market Manger. Joe has worked at WSRO-AM, WGIR-AM & FM, WFHN-FM, WHJY-FM, WWLI-FM WPRO-FM & AM, WXLO-FM, WWFX-FM, WORC-FM and currently is at WSRS-FM and WTAG-AM. Joe is a graduate of North Adams Sate College and has been an active MBA board member since 2003.

Phil Weiner, Secretary

Phil majored in broadcasting at Emerson College and worked at stations in Florida and New England, but his first important management position was as VP and sales manager of WBEC AM-FM in Pittsfield. In 1977, Weiner established WUPE/WUHN, Pittsfield. The stations went on to win many national awards for excellence in community service.

Merril Leferman, Treasurer

Merril started her broadcasting career in Boston in 1969, working in finance and management on the station and corporate levels. Throughout her career, Merril has held positions at several stations, including Concert Network (WBCN), Infinity Broadcasting (WBCN), Channel 66 LP (WVJV-TV66), and Silver King Broadcasting (WHSH-TV66). Currently, Merril is consulting for CodComm, Inc.

Craig Swimm, Director

Craig Swimm is the Vice President & Market Manager for Cumulus Media Springfield Mass, which includes the stations 94.7 WMAS and ESPN 1450. Craig began his career in radio after serving in the Air Force in 1991. His first "real" job in radio was at WARE-AM 1250, where he worked as a sales rep. Since then, he's worked every possible position in a station, including everything from board op to remote setups. Craig received his MBA from Anna Maria College and is an adjunct professor for Marketing at several area colleges. In 2007, Craig became a member of Springfield's 40 under 40. Along with the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association, Craig also serves as a board member for the Salvation Army.

Bill Macek, Director

Bill Macek has been on the board for the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association since 2007. He was a professional Radio Announcer from 1973-2005 and owns and operates four commercial radio stations. Mr. Macek has been elected to nine terms as City Councilor of Haverhill, Massachusetts, serving from 1984-1992 and from 2004-present. Along with serving as City Councilor, he also founded the Haverhill Housing Partnership and is a member and Chair or the Haverhill Council Administration and Finance Committee. He has been an attorney in the General Practice of Business and Family Law since 1996 and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar.

David Isby, Director

David Isby is the General Manager of WSBS AM/FM, part of the Vox Berkshire Radio Group in Great Barrington, MA. David started his radio career in the Berkshires in 1988 at Weiner Broadcasting, working overnights on-air on WUPE in Pittsfield, after graduating from the New School of Contemporary Radio in Albany, New York. In 1993, he became Operations Manager of Weiner Broadcasting, Inc. In addition to being on-air, David also became an account executive at WUPE/WUHN. Vox Communications purchased WUPE/WUHN in December of 2003, where David continued his on-air and sales duties until the end of 2006. In January of 2007, he was promoted to General Manager of WSBS AM/FM in Great Barrington (also owned by Vox Communications).

Bill Fine, Director

Bill Fine is the president and general manager of Boston's WCVB-TV Channel 5 news station and ABC affiliate. A summa cum laude graduate of Boston University's College of Communication, Fine graduated with a bachelor of science in broadcasting and film. He began his career on-air as a sports reporter/director and then sales account executive at WPTZ-TV (1977-1980), owned by Hearst Television in the Burlington VT/Plattsburgh NY market. After a stint at TeleRep, Inc., as an account executive (1980-1981), Fine joined WCVB in the same capacity and during the next 11 years was promoted through the sales management ranks at both WBAL and WCVB, ultimately assuming the position of vice president/general sales manager at WCVB in 1996. In November 1998, he was named president and general manager of WBAL. In August 2005, Fine returned to Boston and the award-winning WCVB as the station's fourth president and general manager in the station's 40-year history.

Tom McAuliffe II, Past Chair

Tom McAuliffe is the President/Owner of the award-winning WMRC - First Class Radio Corp. After receiving his BS in Business Administration from Assumption College in 1990, Tom has held several positions throughout his lifelong career at WMRC, including Account Executive, Sales Manager and General Manager before becoming the president/owner in 2008. Tom remains very active in his community and in the broadcasting industry, as a member of the National Association of Broadcasters, Radio Advertising Bureau and sits on several boards, including the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association.

Karl Renwanz, Associate Director

Karl Renwanz began his broadcast career at KVIE-TV in Sacramento, California in 1971, where he served for nine years, working his way through the ranks of engineering and operations, later becoming Manager, Operations and Engineering. He joined WGBH-TV/FM, Boston as Director of Engineering in 1980 and in 1982 moved across town to WHDH-TV where he began as Director of Engineering and ultimately became Vice President, Broadcast Operations through late 1993. Renwanz then joined his family owned media related company, Video Transfer in Boston where he expanded the operation to seven locations across the U.S., providing support to broadcast networks, stations and corporations for seventeen years when he sold the companies. Throughout his career, Renwanz has served on a number of national and regional Boards of Directors relating to media. In 2010, Renwanz began a Financial Services practice where he currently advises people on how to maximize income for retirement. He has served on the Massachusetts Broadcasters Board of Directors since 1982.

Jordan Walton, Executive Director

Jordan Walton has been the Executive Director for the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association since 2010. Prior to working at the Association, Jordan worked sales for radio stations in Manchester, NH. Jordan is a graduate of Sacred Heart University, with a Bachelor's degree in Media Studies.
